SMS Demag to Provide 2nd X-Melt LF for Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa
04/04/2008 - SMS Demag will supply an X-Melt ladle furnace and automation package for Nucor Steel Tuscaloosa, as well as a complete X-Melt meltshop for A. Finkl & Sons.
Nucor Steel has ordered an X-Melt ladle furnace and automation package from SMS Demag, USA, a company of the SMS group, Germany.
The new unit will be installed in Nucor’s in Tuscaloosa, Ala., facility. It will have a single treatment position to process 150-ton heats from the meltshop’s existing twin-shell DC electric arc furnace.
As part of the project, SMS Demag will also upgrade the Level 1, Level 1.5, and Level 2 systems for the existing ladle furnace, which was also installed by SMS Demag.
SMS Demag USA also announced that it will install a complete X-Melt meltshop for A. Finkl & Sons, a forging company located in Chicago, Ill. SMS Demag USA will supply and install a 70-ton AC electric arc furnace and ladle furnace, as well as a complete automation package. The new meltshop—from which A. Finkl & Sons will produce the steel that it sells to more than 18 countries worldwide—will start production in 2009.
