SMS Demag to Modernize Steel Dynamics CSP Plant

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) has placed an order with SMS Demag, Germany, to modernize the casting strands of the CSP® plant (Compact Strip Production), which were commissioned in 1995 (first strand) and 1996 (second strand).

As part of the modernization, SMS Demag will extend the strand guide system, originally developed by SMS Demag, to include a fourth segment. SDI’s oscillator will also be converted from electromechanical to hydraulic operation.

The purpose of extending the strand guide system is to cast more quickly and thus increase production. SDI currently casts around 2.2 million tons per year of thin (58 mm) slabs ranging from 1,016 to 1,638 mm in width.

With the upgrade, the pinch roll bending unit’s drive rolls will be integrated in the new Segment 4. Hydraulic oscillation will enable SDI to follow various curves, strokes and frequencies as a function of the casting parameters, thus facilitating a more flexible operation.

SMS Demag’s scope of supply covers four “Segments 4”, the pinch roll bending units and hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic control system and the technological control system for the oscillator.

Commissioning is scheduled for 2006.

SMS Demag AG forms part of the Metallurgical Plant and Rolling Mill Technology Business Area of the SMS group.
