SMS Demag to Install Twin-Stand Steckel Mill for Maghreb Steel

Maghreb Steel, Morocco, has awarded an order to SMS Demag to construct a twin-stand Steckel mill for the company’s Casablanca facility.

Designed for an annual production of one million tonnes, the new mill will produce strips 600 to 1,575 mm wide in thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 20 mm. The product range comprises low- and medium-carbon steel grades as well as high-strength low-alloy steels.

SMS Demag’s supply scope comprises the two mill stands and the Steckel furnaces, descaler, and coiler, as well as the mill automation. For the first time in a twin-stand Steckel mill, the mill stands will feature CVC plus® technology.

Twin-stand Steckel mills, which are equipped with two mill stands in tandem arrangement, are a relatively new technology for the rolling mill field. In mills without a roughing stand, the tandem stands perform both roughing and finish-rolling. For the finishing passes, the strip is kept at a constant temperature in the Steckel furnaces. Owing to the combination of Steckel technology and continuous rolling, the plant concept is suitable for the economical rolling of carbon steels in quantities between 1 and 1.5 million tonnes/year.

The new Steckel mill is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2008. SMS Demag will be supported in the project by its U.S. subsidiary, SMS Demag Tippins.
