SMS Demag Starts up Continuous Bloom Caster at Ural Steel

SMS Demag AG, Germany, has successfully put into operation a four-strand continuous bloom caster for Ural Steel, Russia, a part of the Metalloinvest Group. The plant is rated for an annual production of one million tonnes.

The new caster is capable of producing two alternatives section sizes: rectangular sections in the dimensions 330 x 470 mm or rounds with a diameter of 430 to 600 mm. According to SMS Demag, both product sizes represent the world’s thickest blooms.

The continuous caster is equipped with hydraulic resonance oscillation and only one type of stirring coil, which can be used for all casting sizes. For these core components, SMS Demag supplied the complete X-Pact® electrical and automation package, including Level 2.

Ural Steel produces sophisticated tube grades for the oil and gas industry, bridge-building, and heavy engineering, with a 70 % concentration on the Russian market.
