SMS Demag Commissions Wide Slab Caster for Jindal Steel & Power
10/05/2007 - SMS Demag commissions a continuous casting installation at Jindal Steel & Power’s Raigarh works that is capable of producing the thickest and widest slabs in India.
SMS Demag AG has successfully commissioned a continuous casting installation at the Raigarh works of Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL), India.
The single-strand caster is designed for an annual output of 1 million tonnes of slabs that are 215, 250 or 280 mm thick and will vary in width between 1800 and 2600 mm. With the new caster, JSPL will produce India's thickest and widest slabs.
SMS Demag's services included basic and detail engineering plus the supply of the ladle turret, all casting floor equipment, the mold level control system, and hydraulically powered resonance oscillator. SMS Demag also supplied components of the runout section and the hydraulic system, as well as the complete electrical and automation systems.
A particularly noteworthy feature of this commissioning job is the origin of the mechanical components of the strand guide system. The mechanical components were taken from a slab caster that SMS Demag had originally commissioned at a German customer in 1979. In 1996, the circular-arc caster was converted to a vertical bending unit, which required replacement of the base frame, mold and segments. The original components were warehoused until they were purchased by JSPL more than ten years later.
JSPL uses its new caster to produce structural steels, high-strength microalloyed steels, and pipe and tube grades.
