According to SMS Concast, the caster is part of a billet plant designed to produce 1.2 million tons of squares annually. The output is intended primarily for the domestic market, but some is to be exported.  

SMS said the caster has a radius of 10.25 m, and can produce squares in sizes between 130 mm and 250 mm and in lengths of six m or 12 m. The plant initially intends to produce squares in sizes of 130, 150, 180 and 200 mm. 

SMS said the billet caster is equipped with level 1 and level 2 automation, SMS’ proprietary CONVEX mold technology, and interchangeable components to maximize uptime. 

“For example, mold supports, mold cartridges, foot rollers and spray rings are easily interchangeable between the strands, and format-dependent mold parts can be replaced easily and quickly,” the company said. 

The caster is fed by a 170-ton electric arc furnace charged with direct reduced iron.
