SMS Concast to Supply EAF to El Marakby Steel
02/06/2013 - SMS Concast is supplying a 350,000 tonne per year electric arc furnace to long steel producer El Marakby Steel in Giza, Egypt.
SMS Concast is supplying an electric arc furnace to long steel producer El Marakby Steel in Giza, Egypt. With a capacity of 350,000 tonnes per year, the new furnace will broaden El Marakby’s portfolio and strengthens the company’s competitive position.
The new meltshop will be used to feed El Marakby’s rebar mill with 130-mm square billets. The mill has a capacity of 240,000 tonnes per year. Excess billet output will be sold to the open market.
A huge lack of power supply in Egypt challenges billet production in the country. The EAF from SMS Concast offers recovery technology that fulfills the most stringent environmental regulations and contributes towards resource efficiency in steel production.
“We have had a political revolution, so it’s normal to have problems afterwards,” said Hassan El Marakby, deputy CEO of El Marakby Steel. In order to survive, skin-pass mills need to be integrated to create more added-value. With SMS Concast we have found a true partner to develop our business.”
Scrap from the U.S. and Europe will be used in the new furnace. It will also be possible to load the furnace with scrap substitute up to 20 %.
Commissioning of the new furnace is scheduled for the end of 2013.
