SMA Responds to Senate Vote on Keystone XL Pipeline
11/19/2014 - A measure to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline failed passage in the United States Senate by a 59-41 vote, falling just one vote short of the supermajority necessary for passage. The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) commented on the development.
“We are extremely disappointed that the Senate failed to pass Keystone XL,” said SMA president Philip K. Bell. “This project is a priority for the SMA, and its approval is long overdue.
“Politics aside, this project would be a huge win for the U.S. economy and a step toward securing North America’s energy self-sufficiency,” Bell said. “The final State Department review found that the pipeline would create 42,000 jobs during the construction period alone, and would do so without a significant environmental impact,” Bell said.
“This is a setback, but we remain hopeful that the U.S. Government will move forward with this important project in the near future,” Bell said.
SMA is the primary trade association for North America’s electric arc furnace steel producers, often referred to as mini-mills. SMA’s 31 member companies account for over seventy-five percent of total domestic steel production. For more information, please visit the SMA’s website: www.steelnet.org.
