SMA Remarks on Midterm Election Outcomes
11/06/2014 - The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) provided comments on the outcome of the 2014 Midterm Elections.
“While it has been fascinating following these races and monitoring [Tuesday’s] results into the early morning hours, we are ultimately far more interested in helping the new Congress understand and support the steel industry. Steel issues are about jobs and domestic competitiveness. They are not Republican or Democrat in nature,” said SMA president Philip K. Bell.
“A major takeaway from these elections should be that the American people seek leadership and meaningful action from Congress. We are hopeful that Congress will address some SMA policy priorities during the Lame Duck, such as trade promotion authority, infrastructure investment, and R&D tax credits. However we recognize that there are not many working days left before Congress is expects to adjourn in mid-December. As such, SMA will also focus on outreach and increasing steel industry awareness for the 114th Congress,” Bell said.
“I should note that we are extremely appreciative of the leadership of Senator Rockefeller, and wish him well in his retirement. He has been a champion of our industry for many years, and certainly leaves big shoes to fill. But we look forward to working with Members of Congress, old and new, in promotion of the interests of the EAF steel industry,” Bell said.
SMA is the primary trade association for North American electric arc furnace steel producers, often referred to as mini-mills. SMA’s 31 member companies account for over seventy-five percent of total domestic steel production.
