SMA Presents Annual Awards for Safety, Environmental Stewardship, Innovation and Community Involvement

SMA chairman Dick Teets, executive vice president & COO of Steel Dynamics, and Philip K. Bell, SMA president, presented the awards during SMA’s Annual Members Conference at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.
 
SMA’s highest safety award is the Don Daily SMA Achievement in Safety. The 2014 award was presented to Nucor Steel Decatur, Ala. Nucor was recognized for its installation of severe weather shelters. Since April 2011, Nucor has installed 14 new severe weather shelters with a capacity for 400 of its team members. Nucor is one of only 11 Storm Ready Supporter sites in Alabama. In 2012, Nucor Decatur became the 267th Storm Ready Supporter site in the United States.
 
The 2014 SMA Achievement in Environmental Stewardship and Recycling Award was presented to Vallourec Star. The company was recognized for its significant investment in a state-of-the art water treatment facility that promotes efficiency, water reclamation, and the SMA principles of sustainable operating practices.
 
The 2014 SMA Achievement in Innovation Award was presented to Steel Dynamics, Inc. – Roanoke, Va. The company was recognized for the successful design and implementation of a portable fall protection system that highlights original thinking, collaboration, and employee engagement in a solution-focused environment. This validated and affordable design solution is one that can be replicated within the industry.
 
The 2014 SMA Achievement in Community Involvement Award was presented to Nucor Kankakee for its Steel Warrior Program. This program provides housing for severely disabled veterans, allowing easier access to common functions that are custom suited to their individual needs and requirements.
 
Recognitions in Community Involvement were also awarded to ArcelorMittal Vinton and Gerdau Long Steel North America.
 
The award ceremony concluded with a statement from SMA chairman Dick Teets. He said: “We are very proud of the EAF steel industry’s achievements in safety, community involvement, environmental stewardship, and innovation, and are pleased to recognize these individuals and companies for their continuous efforts.”
