SMA Names New Leadership for Board of Directors
10/23/2007 - The SMA Board of Directors announces Gerdau Ameristeel President and CEO Mario Longhi as the new Chairman for 2008-2009, replacing Gallatin Steel President Don Daily, who served as SMA’s Chairman for the past two years.
The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) Board of Directors announced that Gerdau Ameristeel President and CEO Mario Longhi had been named Chairman of the SMA Board of Directors for 2008-2009, as elected during SMA’s Board of Directors Meeting in Chicago, Ill.
Following a 23-year international career with the executive team at Alcoa, Longhi joined Gerdau Ameristeel in June 2005 as President, and in January 2006 was named the company’s CEO. He received bachelors and masters degrees in metallurgical engineering from Mauá Technology Institute in São Paulo, Brazil.
Longhi replaces Gallatin Steel President Don Daily, who served as SMA’s Chairman for the past two years. Daily will continue to serve on SMA’s Executive Committee as Immediate Past Chairman.
The SMA Board also announced that Russ Rinn, CMC Executive Vice President and President of CMC Americas, had been elected as First Vice Chairman on SMA’s Board of Directors. Rinn has served as the President and CEO of CMC Steel Group since January 2006. In September 2007, he took on expanded management responsibilities, serving as President of CMC Americas, directing CMC’s domestic mills, distribution, recycling, copper tube and U.S. long-products trading units.
Robert A. Simon, Vice President & General Manager of Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel Mills, was elected Second Vice Chairman. Simon has been with Evraz Rocky Mountain since 1992, and assumed his current position in 2000. Thomas J. Glaister, President and Chief Operating Officer of Charter Manufacturing, was elected as Treasurer.
The following Executive Committee nominations—in addition to In addition to Longhi, Rinn, Simon, Glaister, and Daily—were also approved by the Board of Directors:

- D. Michael Parrish, Executive VP of Nucor Corp., At-Large Member
- Carrie Casey, President of Quality Bar Corp., At-Large Member
- Regulo Salinas, General Director of Ternium Hylsa, At-Large Member
- Michael Fitch, President and CEO of Alton Steel, At-Large Member
- Chris Jager, President of Scaw Metals Group – AltaSteel, At-Large Member
- Thomas A. Danjczek, President of the Steel Manufacturers Association
The new Chairman will officially begin his duties during the SMA Annual Board of Directors meeting, to be held February 13-15, 2008 in Key Largo.
