SMA Honors Phillip E. Casey and Keith Busse

Feb. 24, 2006 —The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) Board of Directors recognized Phillip E. Casey, Chairman of Gerdau Ameristeel, Tampa, Fla., and Keith Busse, President and CEO of Steel Dynamics, Inc., Ft. Wayne, Ind., as the recipients of the SMA Kenneth Iverson-Marvin Selig Award. The award was presented at a ceremony during the SMA Annual Board of Directors meeting in February 2006.

SMA established the Iverson-Selig Award in 2000 to honor individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the Minimill Industry, exemplifying the best values and qualities of Mr. Iverson and Mr. Selig.

Prior to the recognition of Mr. Casey and Mr. Busse, the award had only been given twice: once to Ken Iverson and once to Marvin Selig.

SMA Chairman Don B. Daily, President of Gallatin Steel, presented the award to Mr. Casey and Mr. Busse, thanking them for their notable contributions to the Minimill Industry over the years.

Mr. Casey was SMA’s Chairman of the Board of Directors from February 2002 to February 2004. Mr. Busse served in that capacity from February 2004 to February 2006.

Mr. Casey was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Special Forces Green Berets, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for heroism. He holds Master of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in international management from the American Graduate School of International Management, as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance from the University of Georgia. He also completed the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard School of Business.

Mr. Busse headed up the team that established Steel Dynamics, Inc. in 1993. He holds an accounting degree from International Business College, and a bachelor's in business finance from the University of Saint Francis, along with a Master's of Business Administration at Indiana University in 1978. He also received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne in 1991.

Mr. Daily stated, “This award is truly special and deservingly merited by Mr. Casey and Mr. Busse. Their leadership has been important to the U.S. Minimill Industry.”
