SMA Comments on Announced Nucor Acquisition of Gallatin Steel
09/16/2014 - The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) commented on the recent announcement that Nucor Corp. will acquire Gallatin Steel Co.
“This is a case of one exceptional steel company acquiring another,” said SMA president Philip K. Bell. “Both have been active SMA members for many years. Gallatin Steel is a tremendous asset, with some of the best quality and safety performance in the industry.
“I believe it’s going to be a great fit for Nucor in terms of company culture and market positioning. Gallatin’s employees have always been leaders within the SMA. And the company’s strategic location on the Ohio River should provide Nucor with flexibility in accessing flat-rolled markets. This should be a home run for Nucor,” Bell said.
SMA is the primary trade association for North American electric arc furnace steel producers, often referred to as mini-mills. SMA’s 33 member companies account for over seventy-five percent of total domestic steel production.
