SMA Board Elects Philip Bell as New President
10/03/2013 - The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) Board of Directors announced the election of Philip K. Bell as SMA president.
Bell is currently director of external communications and public affairs for Gerdau Long Steel North America. He will assume his new role at SMA on 1 November 2013.
Bell will succeed current SMA president Thomas Danjczek, who earlier this year announced his plans to retire after leading the organization for 15 years, following a distinguished career in the steel industry.
The SMA Board of Directors, chaired by Nucor CEO John Ferriola, along with SMA vice chairman Richard Teets, executive vice president and COO of Steel Dynamics, announced Bell’s election, resulting from the SMA Board of Directors meeting held on 2 October 2013 in Charlotte, N.C.
“Phil brings an extensive background of public affairs, corporate communications, leadership and managerial experience in the steel industry. He is equipped to lead a strong, member-focused SMA into the future,” Ferriola said. Ferriola additionally expressed the genuine appreciation of the SMA Board of Directors for Danjczek’s record of achievements at the SMA.
Teets added, “Phil’s leadership experience with a steel company with an international perspective will enable him to successfully direct SMA’s pro-manufacturing agenda in critical policy areas such as trade, environment, safety, energy, and infrastructure.”
Outgoing president Thomas Danjczek stated, “Phil will advance SMA’s positions along with its members and will provide value through advocacy and the exchange of information in the minimill sector of the steel industry.”
Bell said, “I am proud to join the SMA during a very dynamic time for the steel industry and to build on Tom’s record of accomplishments. I look forward to enthusiastically sharing the story of who we are, what we do, and why it is important.”
Bell has held senior level positions in public affairs, communications, operations, administration and human resources at Gerdau, SGL Carbon, Qualitech Steel, and Elementis Chromium. He is a graduate of Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi. Bell serves on the Board of Directors for the Tampa Bay History Center and the Florida Aquarium. He and his wife Linda have two adult children.
The Steel Manufacturers Association consists of 34 North American steel producers who account for over 75 percent of domestic steel production. SMA’s members represent a growing and dynamic segment of North America’s steel industry. Most are electric arc furnace steel producers, or minimills, and make new steel from a feedstock almost entirely composed of recycled steel scrap. SMA’s members are among the most competitive steel producers in the world.
