Slab Caster at New Brazilian Steel Works Now in Operation
08/17/2016 - Startup Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) has put its new two-strand continuous slab caster into service, according to the equipment vendor, Primetals Technologies.
Primetals said the caster has a machine radius of 9.5 m and a metallurgical length of 39.8 m. It is capable of producing slabs in widths of between 1,100 and 2,300 mm and in thicknesses of 220, 250 and 300 mm.
It is being used to cast a variety of grades, from low-carbon structural steels to micro-alloyed medium- and high-carbon steels. The slabs are then rolled into plate and sheet for use in mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, boiler and pipeline construction.
Primetals supplied the core equipment, the fluid systems, and the automation and technology packages. It also oversaw construction work and commissioning and provided employee training.
CSP is joint venture of South Korean steelmakers POSCO and Dongkuk and iron ore miner Vale. The steel works is designed to produce 3 million metric tons of slabs annually, but may be expanded to produce 6 million metric tons annually in a second phase of construction, according to BNamericas.
At a cost of US$4 billion, the steel works is the Brazil’s largest private sector project now under development, BNamericas said. The steel works is in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex in São Gonçalo do Amarante.
