SKF Outfitting U. S. Steel Facility With New Bearings
11/03/2015 - Bearings manufacturer SKF has won an order to supply integrated seals, lubrication and bearings for the hot strip mill table rolls at United States Steel Corporation’s Granite City Works, the company has announced.
The bearings are being installed on more than 800 rolls in the facility. The project combines three technology platforms to counter the effect of high temperatures and contamination associated with production. SKF said the bearings will increase machine availability and reduce energy and grease consumption.
SKF said its seals are effective and have a low wear rate, significantly reducing lubrication needs and allowing for the installation of open spherical roller bearings. Open spherical roller bearings operate with less friction than the previously used sealed bearings, contributing to improved energy efficiency, the company said.
The Granite City Works is a prime producer of steel for the company’s Lone Star tubular plant in Texas. U. S. Steel has said it might temporarily idle the mill on account of reduced rig counts, low steel prices and unfairly traded imports.
