Siemens VAI to Supply 2nd Hot Coil Handling System to ISD Dunaferr

ISD Dunaferr Zrt has awarded Siemens VAI Metals Technologies an order to install another hot coil handling system at the Hungarian steel producer’s hot-rolling mill at Dunaújváros. The order value is in the two-digit million euro range.

This project is part of an upgrade program for the Dunaújváros location by “Industrial Union of Donbass”, ISD Dunaferr’s majority owner. The upgrade is intended to transform the Dunaújváros location into a center for flat steel production.

The new Coil Handling System 2, which will replace an existing line, will be designed to serve as a quick and efficient conveyor from the downcoiler to the coil storage and to the new picking line. It will be capable of transporting coils that weigh up to 35 tonnes with a short coil-to-coil time that will ensure quick and efficient transfer to the storage area or to subsequent processing areas. The upgrade will help the plant to accommodate the planned hot rolling mill capacity increase from its present 1.8 million tonnes per year to 3 million tonnes per year.

Siemens VAI will supply the equipment and spare parts for the hot coil handling system, and will also head the technical project management and be responsible for erection of the line. The scope of contract also includes supervision of commissioning and training of the operating personnel.

This project follows Siemens VAI’s recent installation of the Hot Coil Handling System No. 1, a reversing cold-rolling mill and a pickling line at ISD Dunaferr. These plants have been in operation since June 2008.

The new Hot Coil Handling System 2 is scheduled to go into operation in September 2009.

ISD Dunaferr produces a wide range of hot- and cold-rolled products as well as treated strips and plates of various widths for applications in the domestic appliance and automotive industry as well as for the production of demanding deep-drawn components. The majority owner is the Group “Industrial Union of Donbass”.
