Siemens VAI to Deliver Coil Handling Extension for Celsa Atlantic

Spanish steelmaker Celsa Atlantic, a Celsa Group company, has awarded a contract to Siemens VAI for a second compactor and coil-handling extension. The contract is valued at $5 million.

The new coil handling extension will include a combination vertical and horizontal system and a second compactor. The extension will provide increased on-line coil storage as well as an increase in surge capacity. The greater cooling times that result will enable Celsa Atlantic to produce higher-quality products, such as thermo-mechanically treated ribbed rebar for concrete reinforcement at its plant in La Coruña, Spain.

The contract with Morgan Construction, Siemens VAI’s U.S.-based specialist for high speed wire rod mills, also includes a reloading station that can route coils back into the system for offline processing.

With the investment—which represents the expansion of an existing system—Celsa Atlantic is aiming to increase productivity and improve product quality. Delivery of the new compactor and coil handling extension is scheduled for the first quarter of 2009.

Celsa Group, to which Celsa Atlantic belongs, is ranked tenth in the world among steel long products producers.
