Siemens to Upgrade Bar Mills in the U.S. and Mexico
12/05/2007 - Siemens Metals Technologies will upgrade bar mills at Steel Dynamics’ Pittsboro, Ind., facility and at Talleres y Aceros SA de CV in Ixtaczoquitlán, Mexico.
Siemens Metals Technologies has received orders to modernize bar mills at Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI) in Pittsboro, Ind., and at Talleres y Aceros SA de CV in Ixtaczoquitlán, Mexico.
For Steel Dynamics, Siemens Metals Technologies (MT) will provide engineering and mill equipment for the bar mill at the company’s EAF-based minimill in Pittsboro. Originally supplied in 1996 by the former Pomini (which is now part of Siemens Metals Technologies), this rolling mill is capable of producing 550,000 tons (500,000 tonnes) per year of special bar quality (SBQ) grades.
Siemens will supply two new Red Ring type roughing stands for the Pittsboro bar mill upgrade, as well as advisory and training services. The upgrade will enable SDI to roll larger blooms and increase its yearly output to 750,000 tons (680,000 tonnes) per year.
For Talleres y Aceros, Siemens MT will upgrade an existing 300,000 tonnes/year bar mill at Ixtaczoquitlán, Veracruz, to enable it to roll larger billets. Siemens will install new mechanical and electrical equipment, including three new Red Ring type roughing stands in HVH (horizontal-vertical-horizontal) arrangement, and bar thermo-processing equipment. Siemens will also provide a new 78-meter-long cooling bed with automated cutting, counting, and bundling systems.
Both projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2008.
