Siemens to Supply Three Slab Casters for Hyundai Steel

Siemens Metals Technologies recently received an order from Rotem, a company of the Hyundai Motor Group, for the supply of three twin-strand slab casters for the new integrated iron and steel works project of the Korean steel producer Hyundai Steel Co.

The three casters will be installed at the steel producer's Dangjin Works in Korea, where a new steel works is currently under construction. The new facilities will help the company expand its steel output by approximately seven million tonnes per year. Hyundai Steel currently produces a total of approximately eleven million tons of steel per year.

Siemens will supply its continuous casting technology and the related engineering and key components for the three twin-strand slab casters, which will have a combined annual casting capacity of 8.4 million tonnes of steel. Slabs will be cast in thicknesses of 225 and 250 mm and at widths ranging from 800 to 2200 mm.

Cast steel grades will include ultra-low-carbon to high-carbon steels as well as micro-alloyed steels. These will be rolled to coils which will be primarily used in the automotive industry of the Hyundai Motor Group and also in the household appliance industry. Steel which will be rolled to plates will be used in shipbuilding.

To ensure reliable casting operations, a high degree the operational flexibility and the production of high-quality slabs, the casters will be equipped with state-of-the-art mechanical equipment and technological packages. These include:

  • DynaWidth online mold-width adjustments for fast slab-width changes
  • MoldExpert for online automatic breakout prediction and strand-shell friction monitoring
  • LevCon mold-level control
  • DynaFlex mold oscillation for flexible adjustment of the oscillation stroke, frequency and wave-pattern parameters
  • SmartSegments with DynaGap SoftReduction, a fully automatic roll-gap-control system allowing dynamic soft reduction to minimize centerline segregation and significantly improve internal strand quality
  • I-STAR Rollers, intermediately supported strand-guide rollers for improved strand-shell support and product quality
  • Level 2 Dynacs secondary-cooling system

The project also foresees advisory assistance during slab-caster manufacturing, construction, start-up and commissioning.

Siemens says this was the first time in the company’s history that an order was received for the supply of three large-sized slab casters in a single project contract. The three casters are scheduled for start-up in late 2009.

Hyundai Steel is Korea's largest electric steel producer and the second largest electric steel producer in the world. At three production sites in the Republic of Korea the company currently produces a total of approximately eleven million tons of steel per year comprising carbon steel reinforcing bars, angles, channels, wide-flange beams, rails, coils and sheets, plus stainless steel cold-rolled sheets and coils.
