Siemens to Supply Stainless Meltshop for Xingtai Iron and Steel

Chinese steel producer Xingtai Iron & Steel Corp., Ltd. has placed a contract with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to engineer and supply key equipment for a new stainless meltshop. The total order volume is a two-digit-million-euro figure.

The meltshop—comprising a 50-tonne-capacity AOD stainless steel converter, 50-tonne ladle furnace, and a 4-strand billet caster—will be part of a new production facility Xingtai is building in the Hebei Province. Scheduled to start up in June 2010, the new meltshop will enable the company to enter the stainless- and special-steel market for long products.

Siemens’ scope of supply for the AOD converter includes the engineering and the supply of core components including the tilt drive, valve station, rotary joint, tuyeres and special hydraulic components. Siemens will also provide Level 1 and Level 2 automation, including the metallurgical process model for stainless production, as well as special plant features such as the VAI-CON Simple suspension system, a top lance and individual tuyere control.

Siemens will also supply engineering and key components for the ladle furnace, including current-conducting electrode arms, the high-voltage electrical system, hydraulics, Level 1 and Level 2 automation, and a metallurgical process model.

Siemens VAI will also provide engineering, automation, special equipment and technological packages for the new billet caster, which will be designed to cast approximately 500,000 tonnes of stainless and special steel grades per year, also for ESR (electroslag refining) applications. Technological packages will include LevCon for precise control of steel level in the mold; DynaFlex for online hydraulic adjustment of the mold-oscillation parameters; and Diamold mold tubes to support high-speed casting. Siemens VAI will also provide air-mist cooling for optimized strand cooling, and mold and final EMS (electromagnetic stirrer) for fully homogenized steel composition with minimum strand segregation.

Siemens Ltd., China, will be responsible for local manufacturing and supply of certain key components for the AOD converter and ladle furnace in addition to electrical equipment and Level 1 automation for the meltshop.

Siemens VAI had previously supplied components to Xingtai Iron & Steel for an LD (BOF) converter, two ladle furnaces, two billet casters and five long-product rolling mills, and had also upgraded two of the company's existing casters.

Xingtai Steel, a medium-sized Chinese steel producer, has a current annual production capacity of approximately three million tonnes of low-allow and high-carbon steel grades. The company is the largest producer of specialized high-quality wire and rod in China and also supplies special steel components to the industry, including the automotive sector.
