Siemens to Supply Secondary Dedusting for Ruukki Steelworks in Finland

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Finnish steelmaker Ruukki Metals Oy to supply and install equipment for a new secondary dedusting system in its converter steelworks in Raahe, Finland. The new system, which will reportedly reduce emissions from the steelworks and mixer bay to well below statutory limits, is scheduled to come into operation at the end of 2013.

The new secondary dedusting system in the Ruukki Works, Raahe, is designed for a total extraction capacity of 1.7 million cubic meters per hour. The residual dust content of the filtered offgases will be less than 5 mg per cubic meter. Siemens is handling the basic engineering of the entire dedusting system and supplying key components for the mechanical, electrical, and automation systems. The three 125-tonne LD converters in the steelworks will be equipped with new suction hoods. The steel shop bay and the mixer bay will also be equipped with a roof extraction unit and a number of auxiliary extraction points.

The dust will be removed by a bag filter system, and a newly developed automatic filter bag damage detection system will be used. A static offgas cooler will be installed to protect the filter from the hot offgases, which reach peak temperatures of several hundred degrees.

The scope of supply also includes equipment for handling and storing the collected dust. Siemens will be responsible for erecting the system from filter inlet onwards and for supervising installation and commissioning.

Siemens has completed a number of projects in the Raahe Works for Ruukki Metals in recent years. These include modernizing blast furnaces 1 and 2 as well as modernizing the automation and drive equipment of the hot strip mill.

Rautaruukki Corp. produces metal-based components, systems, and complete solutions for the construction and mechanical engineering industries. The integrated steelworks in Raahe is part of the Ruukki Metals Oy and is the largest production plant of its type in the Nordic countries. With two blast furnaces, three LD steelmaking converters, secondary steelmaking facilities, and three continuous slab casters, the plant can produce and cast up to 2.8 million tonnes of steel per annum. The Raahe site also has a hot strip mill and a plate rolling mill for further processing the steel to form hot strip and sheet metal.
