Siemens to Supply Power Distribution Equipment for SAIL Expansion at Bokaro

The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has placed an order with Siemens Ltd. India’s Industry Solutions Division to supply power distribution equipment for the Bokaro steelworks. Valued at 1756 million Indian rupees (around 28 million euros), the turnkey high-voltage power distribution system is part of a comprehensive project to expand and modernize the plant.

SAIL’s aim for the Bokaro steelworks expansion plan is to increase annual hot metal production from 4.5 million tonnes to 7.44 million tonnes and crude steel production from 4.36 million tonnes to 7 million tonnes. As a result of the expansion, the amount of salable steel products from the facility is set to grow from 3.78 million tonnes to 6.53 tonnes per year. To this end, the steelworks will be augmented with a new steel meltshop with an annual capacity of 3.8 million tonnes and a new cold rolling mill equipped by Siemens VAI for the production of 1.8 million tonnes of high-quality flat products per year. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2011-12.

SAIL’s modernization of the Bokaro facility represents an investment volume of 110 billion Indian rupees (approximately 1.8 billion euros). The upgrade requires that the facility’s power distribution system is enlarged so that the electrical power generation capability can adapt to the growing demand. The power capacity of the facility’s captive power plant also will be augmented to 590 MW.

To support the expansion, Siemens will supply the complete turnkey high-voltage distribution equipment. The scope of supplies and services includes design, supply and installation of 220-kilovolt and 132-kilovolt switchyards connected by 26 kilometer-long transmission lines as well as a plant-wide substation automation system. Moreover, Siemens is responsible for testing and commissioning all the systems.
