Siemens to Supply Main Drives for Nippon Steel Plate Mill Upgrade
12/17/2007 - Siemens will supply a twin main drive for the new roughing train that will be added to Nippon Steel’s heavy plate rolling mill in Oita.
Nippon Steel Corp. (NSC) has awarded a contract to Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) and its cooperation partner company, Fuji Electric Systems, to supply a new main drive for expansion of its heavy plate rolling mill in Oita.
Nippon Steel’s heavy plate rolling mill in Oita produces a maximum plate width of 5500 millimeters and is one of the largest and most productive mills in the world. Siemens had supplied DC drives for the existing rolling stand when the stand was installed in 1975. Siemens replaced the DC drives with AC drives in 1998 as part of a program for increasing the mill’s output.
For the current upgrade, an additional roughing train will be added to the heavy plate rolling mill will, which will expand the plant's capacity by 600,000 additional tonnes per year.
Siemens will supply a twin main drive with non-salient-pole synchronous motors. The drive has a speed of 40 rotations per minute and a rated power output of 8000 kilowatts. Power will be supplied via Sinamics SM150 three-point DC link converters connected in parallel. Siemens will also supervise the installation and commissioning of the drives.
Nippon Steel’s aim for the mill upgrade is to meet the customer needs for high-end steels. Commissioning is scheduled for March 2009.
