Siemens to Supply EAF Meltshop for Egyptian Sponge Iron & Steel
11/23/2007 - Siemens Metals Technologies will engineer and supply a complete meltshop for Beshay Steel’s third facility: Egyptian Sponge Iron & Steel Company, which will be located at Sadat City, Egypt.
Beshay Steel has awarded a major order to Siemens Metals Technologies to engineer and supply a complete meltshop for Egyptian Sponge Iron & Steel Company, a new steel mill to be installed at Sadat City, Egypt.
Siemens Metals Technologies’ scope of supply comprises a 165-tonne electric arc furnace (EAF), a 165- tonne ladle furnace, 6-strand high-speed billet caster, dedusting system, and electrics and automation. Siemens will also supply auxiliary systems such as the engineering and supply of core components for the water-treatment facilities and plant layout. The order value for Siemens is a two-digit million euro figure.
The new steel mill will have an annual production capacity of approximately 1.3 million tonnes of steel which will be rolled to bars and sections. Up to 100% hot direct-reduced iron (HDRI) from a new Midrex direct-reduction plant will be directly fed into the EAF via a hot-link system for significant savings in electrical energy costs. The EAF will be equipped with refining combined burner (RCB) lances that will enable supersonic oxygen lancing (for accelerated initial melting) and post-combustion to maximize the chemical energy of the exhaust gases. The RCB lances will also facilitate refining of the steel via oxygen lancing toward the end of the heat.
In the ladle furnace, the temperature and composition of the steel bath will be adjusted according to casting and final product requirements. The billet caster will be equipped with Dynaflex oscillators for online control of the mold-oscillation parameters as well as Diamold high-speed casting technology. The caster will also be equipped with hot-charging facilities for the adjacent rolling mill.
The first heat in the new meltshop is expected in March 2009.
Beshay Steel, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, currently operates two steel mills in Sadat city, located mid-way between Cairo and Alexandria. These mills produce approximately one million tonnes of bars and wire rod primarily for the local construction industry. Beshay Steel decided to build a third steel works in Sadat City adjacent to the existing facilities based on the rapidly expanding need for steel products throughout the entire region; the new steel works has been named Egyptian Sponge Iron & Steel Co. (ESISCO).
