Hebei Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd. has awarded a contract to Siemens Ltd. China to supply drive and automation systems for a new rolling mill for rails and heavy sections at Handan Iron & Steel Co. in the Hebei Province.
Handan Iron and Steel will use the new heavy section mill to produce rolled products for infrastructural applications. The project volume amounts to more than 75 million renminbi, approximately nine million euros.
Siemens will engineer and supply the entire basic and process automation systems, approximately 600 drive systems of Sinamics S120 design, and motors and motor control centers (MCC) for the new heavy-section mill.
Designed for an annual production capacity of 1.38 million tonnes of heavy sections and rails, the new rolling mill will position Handan Iron & Steel to meet the requirements of a growing market for long products used in transport infrastructure.
The first section is scheduled to be rolled on the new mill in July 2011.
Siemens previously equipped a rod mill and a wire mill of Handan Iron & Steel with electrical and automation systems (2010). Orders for the erection of a five-strand combi-caster and for electrical systems of three BOF converters are currently being executed.
Handan Iron & Steel Co. is part of Hebei Iron & Steel Group Co. Ltd., one of the leading steelmakers in China with a total annual production of approximately 40 million tonnes.
