Siemens to Supply Drive Systems for Corus Ijmuiden Hot Strip Mill

Corus Strip Products IJmuiden has awarded a contract to Siemens Nederland NV to supply new drive technology for its existing Hot Strip Mill No. 2. The order is valued at several million Euros.

The project entails fitting the main drives of the seven-stand finishing line with new Simoreg DC-Master converters. The new drive systems are intended to ensure the availability and productivity of the hot strip mill over the long term. Siemens will be responsible for engineering, installation and commissioning, as well as integration into the existing plant.

All installation and start-up work is to take place during planned maintenance downtimes in the spring and autumn of each of the coming years to ensure that the drive modernization program does not cause any additional production outages. The short time available for installation of the individual systems constitutes a particular challenge.

Siemens has also been contracted to supply new controllers for bending and hydraulic adjustments for the roll stands of the finishing line and to integrate them into the existing Siroll automation environment. The modernization will take place in parallel with mechanical modification.

Siemens previously modernized the automation for the Hot Strip Mill No. 2 in several stages during 2006 and 2007. The new drive systems are scheduled to be installed on the main drives of the seven-stand finishing line by spring 2012.

Corus Strip Products Ijmuiden belongs to the Strip Products Division of the Tata Corus Group.
