Siemens to Provide Two Billet and One Beam-Blank Caster for Steel Authority of India

SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) has awarded a major contract to Siemens Metals Technologies for the supply of two new 6-strand billet casters and one new 4-strand bloom/beam-blank combi-caster. The casters are to be installed at the company's IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur in the Indian State of West Bengal.

The contract includes the supply of basic and detail engineering, equipment as well as advisory and training services. The order volume for Siemens exceeds 80 million euros.

The new casters are part of SAIL’s ongoing modernization and steel-capacity expansion project underway at its IISCO steel plant in Burnpur. The billet casters, which will cast 100-x100-, 120-x120-, and 150-x150-mm billets, are designed for open casting for the production of rebars, and submerged casting for the production of high-quality steels comprising forging quality, high-carbon, cold-heading, spring-steel, electrode-quality and alloyed construction-steel grades.

The billet casters will include advanced design features such as ladle support by means of butterfly ladle turrets, cantilever-type tundish cars, nozzle-changing devices for open-stream casting and stopper rods for submerged casting. They will also feature maintenance-free Dynaflex hydraulic oscillators, Diamold high-speed tube molds, advanced electromagnetic mold-stirring systems, and Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems.

The bloom/beam-blank combi-caster will cast 235-x235- and 280-x200-mm blooms as well as beam-blank sections up to 686-x350-x90-mm in carbon steel and alloyed-steel grades. The caster will also be equipped with advanced casting equipment such as Dynaflex, electromagnetic mold stirring, and air-mist cooling. This will be the second combi-caster supplied by Siemens Metals Technologies in India.

In addition to engineering, the supply of equipment and installation of electrics, Siemens Metals Technologies will also provide advisory services for erection and commissioning, as well as training for all three casters.

The project is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2010.
