Siemens to Provide Power Distribution Package for SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant

The Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has placed an order with the Industry Solutions Division of Siemens Ltd. India, Mumbai, to supply an extra high voltage power distribution package to the Rourkela Steel Plant including the installation of new main Step Down Substations (MSDs). The order is valued at Rs 2116 million, or more than 30 million Euro.

The new distribution package will augment Rourkela Steel Plant’s existing MSDs as SAIL works to enhance the plant’s annual production capacity from its current 1.9 million tonnes to a future 4.5 million tonnes. The planned expansion will also require extension of the existing power supply.

The power distribution package provided by Siemens will convert power received from the grid at the 220-kV level and feed it into the rolling mills and the oxygen plant.

Siemens’ scope of work comprises design & engineering, supply, civil work, erection, testing and commissioning of 220kV gas-insulated switch gear (GIS), 132-kV GIS and air insulated (AIS) switchyards, 33-kV GIS, 11 km of 132-kV transmission line and substation automation system for individual substations. Siemens will also set up 132-kV Transmission Lines, interconnect new and existing substations, and strengthen the 32-kV ring networks to provide the Rourkela Steel Plant with a better power flexibility.

“This order for the Rourkela Steel Plant is an important step forward in the enduring partnership that SAIL shares with Siemens,” commented Robert Wagner, Executive Vice President, Industry Solutions, Siemens Ltd. “All SAIL plants are now equipped with a range of Gas Insulated Switchgears from Siemens, and this is a true testimony of the confidence that SAIL has in Siemens’ ability to deliver to their expectations.”

The Rourkela Steel Plant is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2010.
