Siemens to Modernize voestalpine Stahl Hot Strip Mill

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from voestalpine Stahl GmbH in Austria to modernize parts of a hot strip mill at the company's Linz location. The project, which includes renewal of coiler units and installation of a new crop shear, is valued in the two-digit million euro range.

The upgrade is part of a comprehensive modernization voestalpine Stahl GmbH is currently implementing for its hot strip mill in Linz. The aim is to increase annual hot strip production from today's 4.6 million tonnes to a future annual production of five million tonnes. With the upgrade, the company also intends to add high-strength steel grades and wider and thicker hot strip to its range of products.

Within the context of the hot strip mill upgrade, the company determined that it was also necessary to modernize the coiling plant. For this purpose, Siemens will supply two new coilers to replace coilers 3 and 4, and will renew sideguide control of coiler 5 as well. As part of the project, Siemens will also install the electrical equipment and basic automation for all three coilers. The equipment to be installed is based on Siemens’ Siroll HM integrated solution concept for hot strip mills.

Siemens will replace the existing crop shear with a new drum-type rotary crop shear, for which a Flender-manufactured Duored helical gear unit will be used for the first time. Characterized by high transferrable power, compactness, and low weight, these gear units enables a less massive and less expensive foundation design.

The project is scheduled for completion in July 2010.
