Siemens to Modernize ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe Slab Caster in Duisburg

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG has placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to install new process-optimization models in a continuous slab caster at its Beeckerwerth steelworks in Duisburg, Germany. The process models will improve the quality of the cast slabs.

The project, which ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe is conducting in order to further improve the quality of its slabs, comprises upgrading the cooling and cutting-plan optimization models for the 2-strand continuous slab caster SGA2 at Beeckerwerth Works.

Siemens VAI will develop and implement the required process-control system expansions for the upgrade, including the dynamic Simetal Dynacs secondary cooling model, which is designed to operate with air-mist cooling and includes a 3D temperature-profile calculation. The cut-length optimization model automatically generates settings for mold-width adjustments. Siemens VAI’s scope of supply also includes adapting the caster’s basic automation to the new process-optimization models.

Siemens VAI is responsible for engineering and manufacture of all components, and will carry out the complete integration tests, commissioning and operations training. Originally supplied by a third party, the slab caster has been in operation since 1980.

The modernization of the slab caster is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2011.

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe’s Beeckerwerth oxygen steelmaking plant produces high-quality input materials for high-tensile steel, vacuum-decarburized and interstitial-free (IF) steels, tinplate, thin-gauge sheets, tube strip and heavy plates.
