Siemens to Modernize Shanxi Taigang Stainless Hot Strip Mill

Taigang Group International Trade Co. Ltd. (Taigang Group), China, has awarded Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH a contract to modernize its hot strip mill at Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. Ltd., located in Taiyuan, China.

Siemens’ scope of supply comprises the supply of engineering, equipment, electrics and automation in addition to various services to increase mill performance, product quality and the product range. The contract value for Siemens VAI is a low two-digit million euro figure.

The hot-strip mill to be modernized—one of two that Taigang Group operates in Taiyuan—was originally purchased as a second-hand facility from Japan and was subsequently relocated to Taiyuan in 1994. Siemens VAI and Siemens AG initially modernized this mill in 2002 to enable an annual production output exceeding 3,000,000 tonnes.

The goal of the current upgrade project is to further improve mill performance and product quality as well as to extend the product mix. Siemens will equip the 7-stand finishing mill with new main drives and a new work-roll lubrication system, and will also enhance the existing work-roll cooling system with the installation of dynamic work-roll cooling headers.

Siemens will outfit the laminar-cooling line with turbo-cooling headers featuring dynamic flow control to provide accelerated cooling, and will replace the existing No. 3 coiler and modify the coil-transport system. Siemens will also update the Simatic-PCS-7 automation system, which was previously supplied by Siemens. Supervisory services for erection, start-up and commissioning as well as training of customer personnel round off the Siemens VAI supply scope.

The extended product mix will comprise carbon, HSLA (high-strength low-alloy), stainless and pipe steel grades with strip thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 12.7 mm at widths between 900 and 1400 mm.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2011.

Taigang Group is China’s largest producer of stainless steel and one of the most important producers of long and flat products in China.
