Siemens to Modernize Gas Cleaning System for Ovako Wire Blast Furnace
06/29/2009 - Ovako Wire Oy Ab places order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to engineer and supply a gas scrubber for the blast furnace at its Koverhar plant.
Ovako Wire Oy Ab in Finland has placed an order with Siemens VAI Metals Technologies to engineer and supply a gas scrubber for the blast furnace at its Koverhar plant. The new gas scrubber will enable the Koverhar plant to clean up to 125,000 Nm3 of blast furnace gas per hour.
To ensure that environment standards are still observed after the planned modernization of the blast furnace has taken place, the relevant gas cleaning system will be brought to the latest state of the art. For this purpose, Siemens will supply a Simetal cone scrubber that will reduce the dust and water content in the blast furnace gas to values that meet environmental standards and increase the service life of the downstream plant components.
The new scrubber system is designed for reliable use across a wide range of gas compositions. The operating conditions that are expected after modernization of the blast furnace were already taken into account when designing the scrubber.
Ovako Wire produces around 600,000 tonnes of steel per year in its Koverhar mill in South Finland, casting billets that are sent for further processing at other Ovako locations. The modernization project is to be completed in November 2009.
Ovako Wire Oy belongs to the Ovako Group, a leading European manufacturer of long special steel products. The company produces around two million tonnes per year of low-alloy and carbon steels in the form of bars, wire rod, tubes and rings for applications in the manufacture of roller bearings and in heavy vehicle and automotive production and machine construction.
