Siemens to Equip Slab Casters for Anshan-Linggang Joint Venture

Anshan Iron & Steel Group has placed an order with Siemens Metals Technologies to engineer and supply equipment, technological packages and automation systems for two single-strand medium-thickness slab casters to be installed at Chaoyang An-Ling Iron & Steel Co. Ltd.

The bow-type slab casters will be capable of casting slabs in thicknesses ranging from 135 to 150 mm (extendable to 170 mm) and in widths from 900 to 1550 mm (extendable to 1620 mm). Steel produced at the facility will include low- to high-carbon and alloyed grades.

Siemens Metals Technologies’ project scope includes engineering, supply of special components for the mechanical equipment, technological packages, and Level 2 automation. The technological packages will include LevCon for automatic mold-level control; MoldExpert, which provides online automatic-breakout prediction and strand-shell-friction monitoring; DynaFlex, which provides flexible adjustment of mold-oscillation parameters; and DynaWidth, which will provide online mold-width/slab-width adjustment. Siemens will also supply the Dynacs secondary-cooling model and a sophisticated quality-control system, and will also provide customer training, and advisory services for manufacturing, erection and commissioning.

Currently under construction in Chaoyang City in western Liaoning Province, the new Chaoyang An-Ling Iron & Steel steel-production facility is a joint venture between Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corp. (Anshan) and Lingyuan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. (Linggang). The new facility will produce a total of 2.5 million tonnes of hot-rolled coils per year beginning in mid-2009.

The new facility will process steel to a wide range of carbon- and alloy-steel products for domestic consumption and for export, including wire rod, bars, rails, plates, coils, sheets and seamless tubes and pipes. It will be produced in BOF converters and cast in two single-strand medium-thick-slab casters, and then directly charged into two walking-beam furnaces prior to rolling.

This project is the eight order (comprising a total of 11 slab casters) that Anshan has placed with Siemens Metals Technologies. Anshan’s annual steel-production capacity currently exceeds 16 million tons.
