Siemens to Couple Pickling Line to Tandem Mill at ArcelorMittal Bremen
05/17/2011 - Siemens VAI Metals Technologies received an order from ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH to supply the mechanical equipment required to couple the pickling line to the tandem mill at its Bremen, Germany, plant. The project is scheduled for completion in November 2012.
Siemens VAI Metals Technologies received an order from ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH to supply the mechanical equipment required to couple the pickling line to the tandem mill at its Bremen, Germany, plant. Though operation of the two plants will be coupled, it will still be possible to provide suppliers with pickled coils.
The project, which is scheduled to be completed in November 2012, is expected to reduce both costs and delivery times while enabling the surface quality of the cold strip to be improved.
Siemens is to supply a welding table with strip centering and strip clamps. The coupling will allow the ends of the strips to be joined when operations change from pickled coil production to the coupled mode. Other equipment to be supplied includes deflection rollers to turn the strip 90°, S-block tensioning devices to adjust the necessary strip tension, a six-loop strip looper, guide rolls for deflecting the strip, and dividing shears in the entry area of the tandem mill.
Throughput times will be shortened by eliminating the need to thread strips through the rolling stands, for coil handling, and for intermediate storage of the pickled strip. The continuous strip flow will also minimize surface defects and produce cold strip with more uniform properties, according to Siemens.
The ArcelorMittal cold-rolling mill in Bremen has a pickling line, a four-stand, four-high tandem mill, a batch-annealing line, a skin-pass mill, and an inspection line. Its customers include the automotive and construction industries, machine manufacturers, and producers of domestic appliances.
