Siemens Obtains Certificate of Conformity for Integrated Electric Steel Plants

As the first supplier of equipment for steel works, Siemens VAI Metals Technologies GmbH, Wilstätt-Legelshurst, received a GOST-R certificate of conformity which not only covers integrated electric steel plants (minimills), but also direct-reduction plants. The certificate, issued by the Russian “Certification Body for Mechanical Engineering Production” in Moscow, is a precondition for exports to the Russian Federation—and for the certification of plant components to be used in the construction of steel works.

The GOST-R certificate confirms that Siemens equipment for “complete technological minimill plants for electrometallurgy with auxiliary equipment, accessories and spare parts” conforms to the standard, GOST-R 50460-92, of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology.

GOST-R certification is a prerequisite for the export of technical products, systems and plant components to the Russian Federation as well as for their certification for use in new plants.

Siemens is the first company to be issued a certificate of conformity that also includes direct-reduction installations. Siemens’ certificate also covers electric arc furnaces, shaft-type electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgical installations, and continuous casting equipment as well as diverse rolling mills for long and flat products. It also covers all secondary equipment, necessary accessories, and the required spare parts.

The certificate of conformity is valid throughout the entire Russian Federation and is also recognized in Georgia, Kazakhstan and Belorussia.

“Minimills, which are based on electric steelmaking plants, allow steel producers a high degree of flexibility in the production of high-quality steel grades,” explained Horst Blautzik of Siemens Metals Technologies, responsible for complete electric steel plants.

“Additional benefits are achieved if the certificate covers direct-reduction plants as well,” continued Blautzik. “The installation of direct-reduction equipment is advantageous wherever oil or gas is easy to obtain and is available at a good price. The DRI (direct-reduced iron) produced in these types of mills is an attractive alternative to the use of scrap because the quality and availability of the starting material is guaranteed,” added Blautzik. “We are now looking forward to offering these innovative technologies to our customers in Russia on the basis of certified plants and plant components.”
