Siemag to Provide Slab Grinding Machine for Outokumpu Stainless Oy

Outokumpu Stainless Oy, Tornio, Finland, recently placed an order with Siemag for a grinding machine designed to grind slabs at temperatures of up to 800°C.

The new slab grinding machine is an essential component in the modernization of the company’s existing Tornio production facility for the production of high-grade special steels. It will be capable of grinding special steels of the grades AISI 2xx, 3xx, 3xxTi, and 4xx. It will process slabs with a maximum slab weight of 31 tonnes at temperature of up to 800°C.

The grinding system will be arranged immediately downstream of the continuous casting plant. A roller conveyor will deliver slabs to the grinding machine then transport the ground slabs on to the hot rolling mill.
It will be fitted with a grinding gear that enables the use of grinding wheels with an outer diameter of 915 mm and a width of 150 mm. The grinding angle can be continuously varied between 90° and 45°.

The new slab grinding machine is scheduled to go into operation in 2010.
