Shanghai Baosteel Starts up Danieli Slab Caster

Shanghai Baosteel recently started operation of its new No. 4 CCM twin-strand slab caster.

The startup, in full automatic mode, was accomplished four months ahead of schedule. After only eight days of production, production crews were able to cast fourteen 295-tonne heats per day in 12 hours of continuous production.

Following ramp-up, the caster produced an average of 8800 tonnes per day. At this level of production, the caster will be capable of producing more than three million tonnes during its first year of operation, which compares to a design capacity of 2.8 million tonnes.

The new caster produces 230-mm thick slabs with widths varying from 900 up to 1750 mm. The maximum sequence length to date has been 70 heats, and the number of heats has averaged 31 per day, reaching a maximum of 36 heats on one day. In April, the caster reached a casting speed of 2.2 meters/minute.
