Severstal to Supply Large-Diameter Pipes for Second String of South Stream Project
03/14/2014 - OAO Severstal announced that it has won a tender to supply about 160,000 metric tons of 813-mm diameter pipes for the second string of the South Stream Offshore Pipeline.
The pipes are to be manufactured by the Izhora Pipe Mill, part of Severstal’s Russian Steel division.
Sergey Toropov, CEO of Severstal’s Russian Steel division, commented: “Company’s effective investment program aimed at innovation and the continued development of our production along with benefit of use of our own capacities throughout whole production cycle including steel making allowed us to be a part of this hugely important project. We are now finishing preparations at Izhora Pipe Mill to ensure that we would meet the high expectations of our customer and that all product deliveries are reliable and completed on time.”
Construction of the second string of the South Stream pipeline involves supply of 12-meter pipes produced of DNV450 SFDU grade plates with 39.0-mm wall thickness. Severstal as a vertically integrated steel company produces its own raw materials, has its own steelmaking and rolling facilities that altogether provide substantial synergies for the company.
Plates, pipes, external and internal coatings manufactured at Severstal’s facilities have successfully passed all of South Stream Transport B.V’s necessary testing, confirming Severstal’s ability to meet the project’s complex technical and technological requirements.
Having won the tender process, Severstal will supply 100,000 metric tons of 813-mm diameter pipes manufactured at the Izhora Pipe Mill for the offshore section of the South Stream pipeline system. The contract for delivery of the pipes was signed on 29 January 2014, at South Stream Transport B.V.’s Dutch office, in Amsterdam.
