Severstal Presents Energy Saving Achievements at Energy Efficiency Forum
11/29/2013 - During the Second International Forum on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving ЕNЕS 2013, OAO Severstal presented the preliminary results of its 20-year efficiency program at integrated Cherepovets Steel Mill (CherMK), part of Severstal’s Russian Steel Division.
Russia’s Prime Minister, Dmitry Medvedev, took part in the Forum where he welcomed the Severstal delegation led by Andrei Lutsenko, manufacturing director and chief engineer of Severstal’s Russian Steel Division, and viewed the company’s stand.
Although CherMK’s energy efficiency program is scheduled up to 2020, the plant is already seeing significant improvements in energy efficiency.
Andrei Lutsenko commented: “CherMK has significantly reduced its energy consumption by modernizing equipment, introducing new energy-saving technologies, eliminating ineffective production and using advanced automated energy consumption control systems, and has thereby positioned itself as a leader for energy efficiency among Russian steel makers”.
By reducing its energy consumption every year the plant is achieving more conservative use and better preservation of energy resources, as well as reducing its environmental impact (significant macroeconomic challenges), according to Andrei Lutsenko.
The energy efficiency policy reduced energy consumption per tonne of steel produced at the plant by 17% between 2000 and 2012, to 5,813 Gcal/t . Unit costs of purchased energy also significantly reduced over this time. The level of specific natural gas consumption per tonne of steel decreased by 24 % from 2000, and power – by 22%, including purchased energy which decreased by more than half (from 392 to 192 kWh/tonnes of steel). Reduced consumption of natural gas and energy lessened CherMK’s environmental impact: greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 0.2 t/CO2 per tonne of steel or 2,000,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Significantly, with all Severstal employees involved in energy efficiency processes, energy preservation has become part of OAO Severstal’s corporate culture.
ENES 2013,The Second International Forum on Energy Efficiency and conservation, took place at Gostiny Dvor on November 21−23, 2013. Over 7,000 people and more than 100 Russian and international companies attended the Forum. The Forum is organized by Russia’s Ministry of Energy and the Government of Moscow to promote energy efficiency and also to provide a business platform bringing together representatives from energy companies and the government.
Participants of ENES have the opportunity to discuss the implementation of the state “Energy Efficiency and Energy Development” program to identify ways of reducing energy consumption in various industries and learn from countries with already longstanding energy saving programs in place. The Forum aims to promote energy conservation at international, federal and municipal levels.
