According to Primetals Technologies, the goal of the project is to improve tolerances of product width, thickness control and overall production quality. 

To that end, Primetals Technologies said it will install new mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment and associated automation solutions. The scope of work includes upgrades to an edger, installation of short-stroke hydraulic gap control cylinders on the finishing mill, and retrofitting the cooling line with a power cooling unit. 

It also will incorporate its level 2 control model into the line. 

The work is part of Severstal’s 2018 investment plan, through which it plans to spend the equivalent of US$532 million on its steel division.
