Severstal Columbus Selects TIBCO Spotfire for Enterprise Analytics
11/14/2008 - Severstal Columbus (the former SeverCorr) chooses TIBCO Software’s Spotfire enterprise analytics platform to improve the management of its business and manufacturing processes.
Severstal Columbus (formerly SeverCorr, LLC) has chosen TIBCO Software Inc.’s Spotfire(R) enterprise analytics platform to improve the management of its business and manufacturing processes and improve operational efficiencies.
Severstal Columbus has developed a recipe for success that involves constantly monitoring, analyzing and improving its high-volume, 24/7 manufacturing process. The company previously used SQL and Excel reporting tools on top of SQL/Oracle datasets to manage its business and manufacturing processes. However, the company began to need more advanced reporting and collaboration tools when its new facility came on line in late 2007.
As production ramped up and the amount of data increased, Severstal Columbus could not access and analyze data across multiple processes at the speed of business. Meanwhile, the time required to create new dashboards and reports limited the company's ability to add and respond to new KPIs.
Spotfire will enable Severstal Columbus to improve its standard practices by leveraging its informational assets and allowing the discovery of new insights that lead to better decisions and execution. Built for flexibility, the new platform will allow Severstal Columbus to connect to all of its key data sources—e.g. financial, sales, marketing and production—without requiring the creation of a consolidated data warehouse.
The new platform will also enable Severstal Columbus employees to generate predetermined interactive reports faster and more easily than with traditional means. This will help business managers across the company to access relevant data in a visual environment that will help them to identify problems as well as contributing factors. Speeding the analysis process will enable employees to focus their energy on identifying and correcting problems as they occur.
“Our mill is dynamic, our company is dynamic and our industry is dynamic,” said Mikhail Smirnov, Vice President of Finance for Severstal Columbus. “We are always trying to make changes to improve our process. The less time required to analyze information, the more time we can use to make improvements and raise our bottom line.”
Severstal Columbus was formed in 2003 to design, engineer, build and operate a state-of-the-art steel facility to service growing manufacturing opportunities in the Southern United States. The company broke ground in October of 2005 on a next-generation steel mill near Columbus, Miss. Able to produce 1.7 million tons of high-quality steel a year, the facility provides products for use in the automotive, building, agricultural, pipe & tube, and appliance industries. The company is built on a 1400-acre mega-site designed to accommodate production partners and related manufacturers onsite.
