September World Crude Steel Production Dips Slightly vs. August

Figures released by the World Steel Association show that world crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting stood at an estimated 123.57 million tonnes for September 2011, 0.8% lower than the 124.59 million tonnes reported for the previous month (August 2011) and 9.7% higher in comparison with September 2010.

China logged a 16.5% year-on-year increase for September, while production for the balance of the world (excluding China’s production) increased about 4.5% vs. September 2010. Year-on-year changes (September 2011 vs. September 2010) for the major world regions included a range of single-digit increases as well as one other double-digit increase (Other Europe, +12.6%) and several decreases (Africa, -13.9%; Oceania, -6.6%).
 
According to the Association, world crude steel capacity utilization ratio for the 64 countries rebounded slightly to 79.1% in September, 1.8 percentage points higher than in August 2011. Compared to September 2010, the utilization ratio increased by 3.5 percentage points in September 2011.
 
September Production by Region — Weighing in at 63.8% of total world production for September 2011 (down from 65.2% the previous month), production in Asiastood at 78.81 million tonnes in September, 12.9% higher than in September 2010. South Korea (+17.7%), Taiwan (+12.3%) and China (+16.5%) logged the region’s largest percentage increases vs. September 2010.
 
Representing 45.9% of world production for September (down from 47.2% the previous month), China’s production was 56.70 million tonnes in September, representing a 3.5% decrease compared to the previous month, and a 16.5% increase vs. September 2010. Altogether, the countries in Asia contributed 63.8% of the total reported world production in September 2011, down from 65.2% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the countries of Asia reported the production of 728.31 million tonnes of crude steel, a 9.5% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period. The countries in this region logged single- or double-digit YTD increases vs. the previous year, with the exception of Japan (-1.1%).
 
EU(27) — The twenty-seven countries of the European Union (EU(27)) produced 14.97 million tonnes of crude steel in September, up 4.4% from September 2010. Comparing September 2011 to September 2010, crude steel production grew most significantly in Luxembourg (+17.3%) and Slovenia (+14.6%) while the largest decreases were reported by Finland (-21.9%), Slovakia (-18.8%) and Other EU (-15.0%) over the same period. Altogether, the countries in the EU27 contributed 12.1% of the total reported world production in September 2011, up from 10.2% in August.
 
For the year to date, the countries of the EU(27) reported the production of 135.69 million tonnes of crude steel, a 4.3% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period. While many EU(27) countries reported single- or double-digit YTD increases over the comparable year-ago period, losses were reported by Slovakia (-6.2%), Other EU (-3.1%), Spain (-2.8%), U.K. (-2.3%), and Romania (-0.3%).
 
Other Europe — Production in Other Europe totaled 3.22 million tonnes in September, an increase of 12.6% compared to September 2010. The most significant increases were recorded in Macedonia (+25.4%), Norway (+17.6%) and Turkey (+16.9%) while the largest decreases were logged by Serbia (-43.8%), Bosnia-Herzegovina (-31.8%) and Croatia (-23.2%). Altogether, the countries in Other Europe contributed 2.6% of the total reported world production in September 2011, up from 2.4% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the countries of Other Europe reported the production of 27.42 million tonnes of crude steel, an 18.4% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period. Countries in this region reported single- or double-digit YTD increases over the comparable year-ago period.
 
CIS — Production in the countries of the CIStotaled 9.29 million tonnes in September, reflecting a 1.2% increase compared to September 2010. Uzbekistan (+13.2%) reported the largest increase vs. September 2010. Altogether, the CIS countries contributed 7.5% of the total reported world production in September 2011, down slightly from 7.6% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the CIS countries reported the production of 84.68 million tonnes of crude steel, a 5.6% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period. While most countries reported single- or double-digit YTD increases over the comparable year-ago period, a loss was reported by Moldova (-17.1%).
 
North AmericaProduction in North America totaled 9.95 million tonnes in September, an 8.3% increase in comparison to September 2010. Comparing September 2011 to September 2010, the largest percentage increases were recorded in Guatemala (+78.3%) and Cuba (+23.8%) while decreases were recorded in Canada (-3.3%) and Trinidad and Tobago (-5.0%). Altogether, the North American countries contributed 8.0% of the total reported world production in September 2011, down from 8.4% in the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the countries of North America reported the production of 89.27 million tonnes of crude steel, a 6.1% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period. Countries in this region reported single- or double-digit YTD increases over the comparable year-ago period with the exception of Canada (-0.1%).
 
South America — September production in South America totaled 3.95 million tonnes, a 6.7% increase compared to September 2010. Comparing September 2011 to September 2010, the region’s largest percentage increases took effect in Ecuador (+64.6%), Uruguay (+51.9%) and Chile (+37.5%), while the most significant decrease was recorded in Paraguay (-13.8%). Altogether, the South American countries contributed 3.2% of the total reported world production in September 2011, down slightly from 3.3% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the countries of South America reported the production of 36.78 million tonnes of crude steel, a 12.5% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period. While most countries reported YTD increases over the comparable year-ago period, a significant loss was reported by Paraguay (-59.3%).
 
Africa — Production in Africa totaled 1.10 million tonnes in September 2011, an 13.9% decrease compared to September 2010. Comparing September 2011 to September 2010, most countries reported decreases, the largest of which were recorded in Libya (-100.0%), Morocco (-20.2%) and South Africa (-9.9%). The African countries contributed 0.9% of the total reported world production in September 2011, down slightly from 1.0% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the countries of Africa reported the production of 10.47 million tonnes of crude steel, a 15.0% decrease vs. the comparable year-ago period. Most countries in the region (other than Egypt, +0.8%) reported double-digit decreases vs. the comparable year-ago period.
 
Middle East — Production in the Middle East totaled 1.66 million tonnes in September 2011, a 3.1% increase compared to September 2010. Comparing September 2011 to September 2010, increases were recorded in Iran (+1.4%), Saudi Arabia (+4.5%) and Qatar (+10.0%). Altogether, the countries of the Middle East contributed 1.3% of the total reported world production in September 2011, down slightly from 1.4% the previous month.
 
For the year to date, the countries of the Middle East reported the production of 15.28 million tonnes of crude steel, an 8.7% increase vs. the comparable year-ago period.
 
Oceania— Production in Oceaniatotaled 0.63 million tonnes in September 2011, a 6.6% decrease compared to September 2010. Altogether, the countries of Oceania contributed 0.5% of the total reported world production in September 2011, unchanged from the previous month.
 
Total world production for September 2011 decreased 0.8% compared to the previous month, August 2011, and increased by 9.7% compared to September 2010.
