September Steel Shipments Down 4.3% from August

U.S. steel mills shipped 7,947,262 net tons for the month of September 2011, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
 
The September total represents a 4.3% decrease from the 8,304,638 net tons shipped in the previous month, August 2011, and an 11.3% increase from the 7,140,369 net tons shipped in September 2010. 
 
Year-to-date shipments in 2011 are 68,441,207 tons, an 8.4% increase vs. 2010 shipments of 63,154,585 through the first nine months. 2011 shipments through September would annualize at 91 million tons.
 
A month-to-month comparison of shipments shows the following changes:
 
·         Hot dip galvanized sheets and strip, + 1%
·         Hot rolled sheet, - 1%
·         Cold rolled sheet, - 4%
 
AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. The Institute comprises 25 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 120 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
