September Steel Shipments 6.6% Above Last Year

Nov. 16, 2006 — U.S. steel mills shipped 9,199,000 net tons in September 2006, according to the latest report from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

Total September shipments reflect a 6.6% increase from the 8,630,000 net tons shipped in September 2005, and a 4.1% decrease from the 9,591,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, August 2006.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows the following changes within major market classifications:

  • Service centers and distributors, +4.9%
  • Automotive, +12.2%
  • Construction and contractors’ products, +12.5%
  • Oil and gas, +10.5%
  • Machinery, industrial equipment and tools, +7.5%
  • Appliances, utensils and cutlery, –4.2%
  • Containers, packaging and shipping materials, +3.3%
  • Electrical equipment, +20.8%
