SDI to Build Four New Paint, Galvanizing Lines
04/15/2021 - Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) on Thursday revealed plans to build four new flat-rolled coating lines in the U.S., representing an investment of at least US$400 million.
In a statement, the company said two of the coating lines will be built somewhere in the southern U.S.; the other two will be built in the Midwest.
“Our unique operating culture, coupled with our considerable experience in successfully constructing and operating highly profitable EAF steel mills and flat-roll steel coating lines, positions us well to execute these strategic initiatives and continue to grow," said Steel Dynamics Inc. chief executive Mark Millett.
SDI said the southern U.S. project, an investment of US$225 million, is intended to complement its Sinton, Texas, flat-rolled mill, which is to open late this summer. SDI said the coating lines will consist of a 300,000-ton galvanizing line with Galvalume coating capability and a 240,000-ton paint line.
The Midwestern project, an investment of between US$175 million to US$200 million, is meant to support its other regional flat-rolled operations, allowing them to offer additional value-added products. The project will consist of a 300,000-ton galvanizing line, also equipped with Galvalume capability, and a 240,000-ton paint line.
SDI said site selection is underway and engineering specs are being developed for each pair of lines. They are to be put into service in the second half of 2022, SDI said.
