SDI Starts Up New Paint Line at Mississippi Sheet Mill

According to Danieli, installation and start-up of the double-coat line was completed ahead of schedule, with less than 16 months passing between the contract signing and commissioning.

Installation of the line, along with an upgrade to an existing galvanizing line, cost an estimated US$100 million.

"This investment is a strategic step toward further diversification into higher-margin products for our Columbus Flat Roll Division," Steel Dynamics chief executive Mark Millett said at the time the project was announced.

“The Columbus investment will allow us to produce double-wide steel, and sell into the southeastern markets, including Mexico. We plan to sell surface-critical, appliance-grade steel, as well as construction related products, including those used in heating and air conditioning units, residential entry doors, and lighting fixtures."

The line, capable of operating at 600 feet per minute, will coat cold-rolled, galvanized, pickled hot band and Galvalume. It can handle sheet in widths of up to 72 inches and in thickness of up to 0.076 inches.

Danieli said the line employs Danieli Fata Hunter’s patented Single Slide Coating Machines with closed-loop force control. It also makes use of Fata Hunter’s Clean Air oven system.

“This oven system, in combination with the Roll-On Pre-Treatment chemical coater and afterburner system, will minimize the environmental impact of the line, meet SDI’s rigorous sustainability criteria and service the market segments that require the most stringent quality standards,” Danieli said in a statement.
