SDI Looks for New Paint Line to Start in Early 2017; Wins Quality Certification for Premium Rail
07/19/2016 - Construction of a new paint line at Steel Dynamics Inc.’s Columbus, Miss., plant is on budget and on schedule, chief executive Mark Millet said on Tuesday.
Speaking during the company’s quarterly earnings call, Millett said the first shipments are expected to leave the new facility sometime during the first quarter of 2017.
The line will be capable of coating 250,000 tons annually. Millett also said the company this month is modifying the plant’s galvanizing line so that it can also produce Galvalume.
Steel Dynamics is investing approximately US$100 million in the two projects.
Also during the call, Millett said that company’s premium rail has now been certified by all of the major Class I railroads, with Canadian National Railway recently accepting Steel Dynamics' product.
Steel Dynamics entered the premium rail market in 2014. Millett said the company expects to ship approximately 260,000 tons of rail this year.
