Scientist Suggests a New Steelmaking Ingredient: Used Tires
08/10/2016 - A scientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia says she has come up with a new use for old tires: grind them up and inject them as carbon into electric arc furnaces.
“Waste tires, like coke, are good sources of hydrocarbons. This means they can be usefully transformed in EAF steelmaking, as long as the process of injecting them into the furnace is precisely calibrated,” Veena Sahajwalla, director of the university’s Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology, tells The Hindu newspaper in an interview.
