Schnitzer Steel to Rely on On-Site Battery Energy Storage System
09/09/2021 - West Coast-based Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc. announced that it has contracted PowerFlex – an EDF Renewables Company to provide a 1,600-kW battery energy storage system at its Oakland, Calif., USA, facility.
The system will allow Schnitzer to lower electricity costs by charging during periods of low energy demand and high availability of renewable energies. In contrast, the system will discharge during periods of high energy consumption. The battery uses real-time data to optimize energy consumption.
“This is an incredibly exciting project for us,” Robert Ellsworth, director of sustainability for Schnitzer Steel Industries, said. “It’s cutting edge, a technological innovation, and one of the first of its kind for our industry, at one of our most dynamic locations. This project serves as a prime example of our commitment to sustainability, not just from a global perspective, but more importantly at a local, community level.”
Nick Chaset, chief executive officer for East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), commented, “Schnitzer has been a valuable and like-minded customer and partner to EBCE from our start, demonstrated through their voluntary selection of our 100% carbon-free option for their electricity use in Oakland. This new 1,600-kW battery installation by PowerFlex further demonstrates their continued commitment and vision, allowing them to reduce both cost and emissions in a cutting-edge fashion. We hope this project will act as a model for other businesses, far and near.”
